Software licences at UiB may be divided into four categories:

To be able to use software legally, a licence is normally required. However, some licences are given for free, and some are already paid for.

  • Software needing a licence: For this kind of software the department needs to buy the right number of licences.
  • Site licence: This is software for which UiB or at least one department at UiB has entered into an agreement covering all of UiB. (In some cases a site licence may also cover one or more departments.
  • Licence server software: This licence type means that the software connects to a dedicated server to verify the licence. This solution is often used for a limited number of licences are bought to use at the same time.
  • Free software. Free software can be freely distributed to UiB PCs as long as a software installation package is available.
