Freeware is computer software that is available for use at no cost or for an optional fee. Some freeware is not the same as "free software", which is software which, in short, can be copied, modified and (re)distributed by anybody without restriction. Freeware may have restrictions on use and distribution. Free software is not necessarily available without a charge.

UiB also installs freeware on UiB computers. Some is also standard on all computers run by the IT department.

Freeware can normally be downloaded for free from the software's homepage, like [www.mozilla.org www.mozilla.org]. Software may however be available for free for UiB users, even if it is not free for everybody else. This is usually because it is free for either all non-profit or educational institutions, or because it is covered by a Unifob or UiB site licence agreement.
