@uib.no - New and easy e-mail address for the staff

All old e-mail addresses will be able to receive e-mails at least until 2024.

This only applies to UiB staff, and will not affect students, or staff of companies that UiB provide services to.

To simplify and adapt UiB’s e-mail system to new and better services, the abbreviation for unit / department / area will be removed from the e-mail address. All new e-mail addresses will end with @uib.no

The Central Administration will receive the new e-mail address from Thursday 4 December. All others will receive the new e-mail address on Thursday March 12. Staff with similar names, will be contacted by the IT Department either via email or via telephone.

Normally there is no need carry out anything special after the change of the e-mail addresses. E-mail systems will be updated automatically, but the changes might take some time. This also applies to mobile devices and private equipment. However if you experience any problems please follow the user manuals on the bottom of this page or contact BRITA. If you have questions or would like more information; please make an issue at UiBhjelp.

Those who have Lync account will also get this updated. After this update, errors may occur within Lync, especially with contacts and groups. If you experience problems with Lync please find user guides on the bottom of this page or contact BRITA.

Why new e-mail address:

  • UiB get a more clear profile. We appear to be more unified.
  • Do you know the name of a person then you know the e-mail address, as well.
  • Easier communication of e-mail addresses.
  • Less administration by internal job exchange and name changes of the units.
  • Less complex e-mail system.
  • To be able to offer employees new modern communication services.

New services

Staff with an Exchange / Outlook e-mail account, will be offered more and newer communication services. These services are based on Microsoft Lync, and we hope to offer the largest possible number of services on all platforms that we offer management on (Windows, Mac and Linux). Some of the services are in pilot and some services are still only at the planning stage. Still there remains some testing and the services will be offered when they are fully tested and quality assured. Communication services can eventually be used to communicate with other institutions in the higher education sector and hopefully other UiB partners.

Examples of services:

  • Instant messaging (chat)
  • Presence
  • Telephone / call functionality on the PC (softphone)
  • Videoconference
  • Desktop sharing
